Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Technologies in Bioinformatics

CILEA is an interuniversity consortium, established in 1974, working in Information and Communication Technologies. CILEA provides services to Universities, research centres, public institutions and enterprises.

Main spheres of action are:

· high performance computing services using powerful computers;
· professional advice and assistance for developing and optimizing simulation codes;
· professional advice and assistance in system software maintenance;
· development and management of "e-learning" applications and collaborative multimedia;
· design, assistance to implementation, testing of advanced data networks;
· implementation and management of data security control systems;
· design, development, management of WEB systems even as outsourcing service;
· data base design, development and management for scientific and operational applications;
· professional advice and services in library automation;
· management and archiving services of digital libraries (e-journals and data bases);
· implementation and management of specialized courses.

The Board of Directors is made up of the rectors, or their delegated, from nine Universities.
CILEA's activities are subjected to the supervision and control of the Italian Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca (MIUR).
The Consortium has a 96 staff, 82 in Segrate and 14 in Rome (over 70% have a degree).
CILEA's sales have been:
2002- Euro 10.860.000 (4.900.000 as fundings from MIUR)
2003- Euro 11.980.000 ( 5.150.000 as fundings from MIUR)
Staff people addressed to research activities have been 37 (as FTE counting); spending is 43% of 2003 sales.

curriculum

Luciano Milanesi (Cremona, 11/12/1953) received the BS degree in Atomic Physics in 1981. In 1986 he received the Ph.D. degree in Health and Hospital Physics, participating to the development of the project "Cyclotron facility for Positron Emission Tomography application in Nuclear Medicine". Since 1987 he is Staff scientist at the ITB, of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Since 1988 he is head of the Bioinformatics Division of CNR-ITB in the framework of the "Human Genome Project". Initially, it focused on developing tools for the genome sequence analysis and prediction of gene structure in different organisms. More recently, his work has shifted towards studying the functions of genes, promoter prediction, gene expression analysis and the development of gene data-mining tools integrated with full text biomedical literature search. From January 2004 he has become group leader of the Bioinformatics Unit at the University Consortium CILEA. He has been principle investigator for these Projects: 1996 - 1999 European Commission "TRADAT" TRAnscription Databases and Analysis Tools, 2001-2003 MIUR CNR "Molecular Genetics", 2002-2004 MIUR "O2I" Online Research Information Environment for the Life Sciences; 2003-2005 MIUR CNR "Functional Genomic"; 2001 -2004, MIUR Bioinformatics for the University Excellence Center CISI "Center for Bio-molecular Interdisciplinary Studies and Industrial applications"; 2002-2004 European Commission ORIEL "an Online Research Information Environment for the Life Sciences"; 2003-2004 NATO Science Programme "computer modelling, 5'-UTR, co-expressed genes, macrophages, Gene networks, Epstein-Barr Virus, cis elements recognition, B-DNA conformation"; 2004-2006 European Commission INTAS "Modelling and analysis of mammalian cell-cycle regulatory networks in normal and pathological states by bio- and chemoinformatics". 2003-2005 MIUR FIRB Post-Genomic "Bioinformatics for Genome and Proteome"; 2003-2005 MIUR FIRB "GRID-IT: Enabling Platforms for high-performance computational GRIDS oriented to scalable virtual organizations ". Since 2002 he is teaching Bioinformatics for the course of Medical Biotechnology at the University of Milan , and since 2003 he has been teaching fundamentals in informatics at specialization degrees for the University of Milan . He is also giving classes in 20 different courses in Bioinformatics in Europe . He is Editorial Board Member of Briefings in Bioinformatics end IEEE Trans and In NanoBiosciences. He has published contributions in several books and scientific publications in Bioinformatics.
